One payroll definition.
Season-attributed baseball payroll: annual salaries plus attributed bonuses, buyouts, retained payments and credits. Not luxury-tax AAV, not cash flowing out of the bank in 2027. Deferred compensation for past service is not charged a second time. Benefits and CBT are excluded.
2026 includes actual midseason changes and earned incentives. The 2027 scenario uses full-season salary assumptions and an explicit reserve, so the comparison is a planning estimate—not an identical final-year outcome.
History is not a forecast.
WAR is FanGraphs’ historical regular-season value, across all teams for each player, rounded to one decimal. Batting and pitching contributions are combined, including position-player pitching. We do not sum these into projected team wins. Missing seasons stay blank; a verified zero stays zero.
Age is calculated on Opening Day, March 25, 2027, from MLB birth dates. Core WAR and payroll data are dated snapshots. Incoming trade identities and contracts are retrieved on lookup, with their own sources and timestamps.
Assumptions have labels.
Arbitration figures are third-party estimates. Pre-arb salary is a planning assumption, not an announced 2027 minimum. Pending mutual options need agreement from both parties. “Non-tender / release” assumes a non-guaranteed contract can be ended before commitment; it is not a transaction prediction.
Trades model this season’s salary relief and incoming payroll only, not value, future-year contracts, no-trade rights or feasibility. Lineup assignments are a planning template, not verified positional eligibility. Medical evaluation, waivers, option eligibility and service-time rules are not modeled. A 26-player count alone does not make a legal roster.
Free-agent estimates.
Small, named role-based comparable groups supply minimum-to-maximum annual values for salary. Term ranges are separate editorial assumptions. The default is the midpoint AAV, rounded to $0.25M, with a separately chosen editorial term. The flat annual salary equals AAV only for these hypothetical new deals. No inflation, health or aging adjustment is implied.
The pool is intentionally limited, not a complete market or endorsement. Details under each player explain the mismatch risks. Future incentives, posting fees and qualifying-offer compensation are excluded.

Baseball Cube’s Opening Day figure is $202,378,541: $14,329,303 higher. It is a different snapshot and salary treatment (for example, Eovaldi $25M vs. $29M attributed, Seager $31M vs. $31.5M). The full independent difference remains unreconciled; we do not claim both sources agree.
Deferred cash disclosure: Robertson’s $1M due in 2027 relates to past service and is not charged again here. Martin’s deferred bonus is due in 2028–29; Eovaldi’s allocated bonus is included in annual payroll, not shifted to its cash-payment dates. See ledger sources.
